sad sack n.

[abbr. sad sack of shit n., and thus the eponymous cartoon, created by George Baker (1915–75) in the US Army’s Yank magazine]

1. a miserable, depressed (and depressing) person, usu. thus singled out in an institution, such as prison or the army.
