[generic use of proper name Tommy + Tanna, an island near Vanuatu (the Near Hebrides); the supposed ‘Pacific Islander/Polynesian gardener from Manly’ Tommy Tanna who who is trad. credited with bringing surfing to Aus. was presumably also the generic nickname]
