run-in n.

1. (US tramp) of a beggar, obtaining a free meal from someone whom one solicits for a donation.

[Can](con. 1920s) O.D. Brooks Legs 86: We had pocketed three dollars and change and had a run-in. That’s when the guy you beg from takes you to the nearest restaurant and buys you a meal.

2. (UK Und.) a hiding place for stolen goods.
