1931		Irwin Amer. Tramp and Und. Sl. 88: Gooseberry Ranch. — A brothel. Just why this name was given no one has ever explained, but it seems likely that the origin lies in the verb ‘to goose,’ meaning to tickle, especially when unexpectedly done.
