[one Robin, a real-life aniseed-water seller d.1651 (and briefly married to the highwayman John Cottingham, exec. 1685), noted by Pepys as a hermaphrodite and well-known as such in mid-17C literature; a then popular song was entitled ‘Aniseed Robin’ or ‘Cuckolds All in a Row’]

a hermaphrodite; latterly generic for a prostitute.
