stonewall v.

[the earliest cited use is late 19C cricket jargon, thence to political use and thence to general, but note US General Thomas ‘Stonewall’ Jackson, nicknamed for the implacable stand he conducted during the US Civil War Battle of Bull Run, 21 July 1861]

(orig. Aus.) to put up barriers, to obfuscate, to prevaricate (often in a sporting context); thus stonewaller n., a person or thing that obstructs; also stonewalling n. and adj., obstructing.
