a genre of ultra-violent films, coined as a name by director George Romero (b.1939), e.g. Blood Feast (1963), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), The Driller Killer (1979); thus splatterpunk, a similarly violent genre of fiction; splatterporn, violent pornography.
